Colback has spent the last 18 months on loan at Portman Road from Sunderland, but is due to return to the north east at the end of the month. Keane wants to keep him on loan, but the 21-year-old is believed to be pushing for a permanent move.
Keane said: "Of course I'd like to keep Jack, he's my sort of player.
"We're talking to Sunderland, but a lot can happen in a few weeks so we will see what happens.
"Sometimes a player wants a bit more security than a loan move and I can understand that. He's an intelligent lad and needs to look after himself and I would do the same in his position.
"We won't be the only club looking at him, that's for sure. There's a long way to go before anything is sorted."
