Sources close to the club reported a few weeks ago that Joe Royle was interested in capturing the signature of the strong centr-back and may have offered him a contract.
Royle has so far refused to comment on the situation but Henchoz's free transfer will increase speculation linking him with Ipswich.
The 31 year old Swiss defender played an intregal part in Wigan's highly successful first season in the premiership and could as yet emerge as a target for one of the newly promoted clubs.
David Thompson, a mifielder who was at Blackburn until January, has also been released by Jewell.
Thompson is in the mould of an attacking midfielder who can contribute goals, exactly what Royle is looking to add to his squad but Thompson would seem to be out of Town's reach and reluctant to leave the Premier League at this stage of his career.
