As we reported previously, starting from the 2004/5 season, Football League Division One is set to be renamed The Coca-Cola Football League Championship, whilst Division Two and Three will be renamed Coca-Cola Football League One and Coca-Cola Football League Two respectively.
Soeaking of the news, Football League Chairman Sir Brian Mawhinney told the Official Football League Site: ’The Championship' is a term steeped in the history of The Football League. Reclaiming it for our leading clubs will place a new enhanced emphasis on its status at the pinnacle of our competition.
“Not only is it a gateway to the Premiership, it is one of Europe's leading league competitions, in terms of the standard of football being played, the high quality of stadia and the numbers of supporters attending”
Mawhinney also revealed that there are more changes than simply the league title ahead: “We will be making a series of equally significant announcements over the coming months as we unveil a number of new initiatives aimed at co-ordinating and developing the outstanding work already being carried out by clubs.
League Confirm Name Changes
"We want our games to become ever more attractive, not only to our core audience of football fans, but also to a new generation of youngsters on the brink of discovering the game. We also want a commercial audience to be encouraged to re-evaluate its perception of the League.”
