The Republic of Ireland international was substiuted after just 12 minutes of Saturday's clash against Stoke CIty at Portman Road after pulling up just after sending a cross in, and early estimates predicted that the man on loan from Blackburn Rovers, could be ruled out for at least five weeks.
However, the results of yesterdays scan which came through today have shown that the damage is not as bad as first though, and the Dublin born midfielder will be out for around a month.
Speaking to the Official Ipswich Town Website, Town physio Dave Williams confirmed: "The scan shows Alan has suffered a small tear in his hamstring. There is fluid around the hamstring area as well but the injury is not as bad as we first feared and with the tear being so small, you could argue that it's a strain rather than a tear.
"He will be missing for a while, perhaps three to four weeks, but it's certainly not an injury that will keep him out for any real length of time."
Speaking of the loss, Joe Royle also praised Mahon's influence of the improving peformances of late, and confessed that he would be missed while out injured: "He will be missed. He has given us another dimension that we didn't have before but we will have to get on with it."
