The Republic of Ireland midfielder spent two months on loan at Town earlier in the season, and Boss Joe Royle was very much interested in securing the wide left players signiture on a permenant basis. However with Town still currentley facing a severe cash shorage, he was unable to turn this into a full time move.
Wigan boss Paul Jewell is a known admirer of Mahon, and over the last few weeks the Latics have been linked with Mahon on a number of occasions. This afternoon they announced that they were in talks with a player that fitted Mahon's descrpition.
"We are in talks with a player as we speak and he is someone who plays wide on the left. Hopefully by the end of the day we will have secured his signature and although we would have liked to have it wrapped up so he could train with us this morning, that was not to be." Wigan Boss Paul Jewell told the Official Wigan Website.
"People can probably guess who the player is, but I'm not willing to say publically just yet because we've been kicked in the teeth a few times already this season and I don't want to come out and name him and then find it doesn't happen for whatever reason!"
Ironically, should the player in question be Alan Mahon, his first game will be against Town on Saturday Evening at Portman Road in a game which is shown Live on Sky Sports.
