Makin last week had an injection to try and help cure the problem, and if this doesn't clear up the problem that has dogged him all season, it would have been likely that he would have required extra surgery and his season would have been over.
Speaking to the Official Club Website, Town boss Joe Royle said: "Chris has had a great session, the best spell of training he has enjoyed for ages. It didn't look too good after the injection but it's a lot more encouraging now.
"He is not out of the woods yet and we will keep an eye on things and see how he goes but if carries on like he did today, then we could look at him playing for the Reserves in a couple of weeks providing he does not have any setbacks.
"We have missed Chris' experience and it will be a real boost for us to have him back but for now, we have to take it a day at a time."
