The former Sunderland Left Back has been greatly missed by the blues since picking up an injury in August, and has not appeared in the first team since the end of that month.
Makins progress has been slow and now will face an injection into his spine to clear the problem up, if this does not do the trick, it's likely that the £1.1M signing will miss the rest of the season.
Speaking to the Official Club Website, Town boss Joe Royle confirmed: "Chris is not one for injections at the best of times.
"But this is the next step. If that doesn't work, it's likely that he will have another operation and with the timing as it is, that could be the end of the season for him.
"It's a big disappointment for Chris and for us. He's an experienced player, a quality player and we have missed him."
