Town were previously linked with Robert Huth, Glen Johnson and Chris Baird as being the young Premiership defender the club would like to bring in for the season, however Town boss Joe Royle haas already confirmed the signing will be none of these.
Speaking of the rumours linking him with a move for England Under 21 International Hoyte, Royle told the East Anglian Daily Times: "I'm not announcing or renouncing names, as it just turns into a guessing farce.
"I had thought the deal would have been done by now but that has not been the case and I'm regretting saying on Saturday that we were close.
"We are still speaking to clubs and I'm still hopeful. We have one or two prospects and one I feel is favourable but he won't be here before the Newcastle game or maybe not even before the weekend."
Royle has also expressed his desire to bring a striker to the club, either on loan or on a full time deal after someone departs.
