Counago is currentley Town's highest paid player, and after a slow start to the pre-season he has started to come into his own, particuarly in the recent friendly against Oxford where he worked hard and scored his second of the pre-season alongside a three man attack including Darren Bent and Dean Bowditch.
Counago has always maintained that he would like to stay at the club and fire the club to the Premiership in order to earn a new contract, but due to his Premiership level wages, it was widely expected he would be leaving the club this Summer.
Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times this morning about his desire to bring a new striker to the club, Town boss Joe Royle confessed: “The way Pablo has played at times this past week would make those needs change.
"He has shown more often what we know he can do and if he can keep that up and take it on we may not have to bring someone else in. That said, we have contingency plans and if a player leaves that gives us more room to manouvre.”
