The midfielder completed his move to Town for £250,000 from fellow Coca-Cola Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion, and the signing represents Town's first with a fee since that of Marcus Bent in November 2001.
Speaking to the Official Club Website, the Town chief said: "I am very pleased that we have been able to recruit Darren to join our promotion bid.
"After the hardships we have experienced, this is a landmark deal for Ipswich Town Football Club. The fact that we have been able to pay a fee for a player once more symbolises our recovery.
"We remain careful and prudent with our finances, however further investment in loan notes coupled with growing attendances and an attractive FA Cup-tie have all contributed to an improving situation that has enabled the Board to make this investment."
