Sir Alf Ramsey - In Profile

Last updated : 23 November 2007 By ITFM
Ramsey was Born in Dagenham, Essex, in 1920. He made his debut for Southampton in 1946 and won his first of 32 caps for England and joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1949.

Ramsey was appointed Ipswich Manager in 1955, following on from Scott Duncan in the managers hotseat. In his first season he lead Town to 3rd place in the southern section of Division three before leading his side to the Division Three championship the following season.

Following promotion to the second tier of English football, Ramsey led his side to an eighth placed finish in 57-58, 16th in 58-59 and 11th in 59-60 and even the most optomistic Ipswich fan would be expecting what was about to come next.

In the two seasons that followed, Ramsey not only led his side to the Division Two title, but the following year led them to become the Champions of England by winning England's top division in the clubs first season in the top flight.

The season that followed however was not so glorious - Town the reigning champions, could only manage a 17th placed finish in Division One, and towards the end of the season Ramsey was appointed manager of the England National Team.

Ramsey led England to a World Cup Final victory in 1966 and was knighted for services to football in 1967. Alf left the England manager job in 1974 and then had a brief spell as Birmingham City manager in 1977 and sadly passed away in Ipswich in 1999 at the age of 79.
