The Academy side, consisting of very young players lost 1-0 against Watford on Saturday with the under 19's still winless with 2 defeats and 1 draw from their 3 games of the season so far.
Speaking to the Official Club Website Smith however asked for people to give the youngsters time : "The team we fielded on Saturday included six first year scholars and we only had Chris Hogg as a regular from the U19s in the side.
"That's a very young line-up and physically we are behind some of the teams we are playing at the moment. The Watford lads were right at the top age scale and were stronger than our boys but football wise, we more than matched them.
"Our boys have got to learn to compete physically with the opposition - and they will. They just need time because they are all good footballers. After Christmas I would expect to see the boys really push on. They will be much stronger then."
