Trotter's previously contract expired at midnight last night, and despite offers of a contract at Scunthorpe where he won promotion to the Coca-Cola Championship at the end of last season whilst on loan, Trotter chose to fight for his place in Roy Keane's starting eleven.
Confirming the news to the Official Club Website, Trotter said: "I spoke to the manager and he said he wanted me to stay here which was obviously a big boost for me.
"I'll admit I was a bit surprised. At the end of last season I thought I would be moving on from Ipswich. I enjoyed my time at Scunthorpe and their manager wanted me to go there.
"But with a new manager here, it's a fresh start. The manager has said I'll get the chance to show what I can do and that's probably the major factor in me staying. I've not really progressed at Ipswich over the last year or two but this is a new opportunity for me."
