Ipswich showed just how much work there is for whoever is manager at Derby County next season as they signed off with a superb display of passing football.
The Suffolk club will be one of the promotion contenders next year on the evidence on this display which was too much for a Derby team that pressed the self-destruct button at the back.
Ian Evatt, who replaced the injured Warren Barton after 15 minutes, was involved in three of the Ipswich goals and it was no surprise when he was replaced early in the second half.
What Brian Clough, awarded the freedom of Derby before the game, made of this would probably be unprintable.
The Rams were a shambles at the back and the only surprise was that Ipswich did not score more goals.
Derby went ahead when Rob Lee saw a cross go in off the back post but Ipswich were soon level when Evatt turned a cross from the impressive Pablo Counago into his own net.
The defender was then at fault when he allowed a Tommy Miller cross to reach Darren Bent and although Andy Oakes saved his first shot, the striker easily tucked away the rebound.
Derby were finished when Evatt flattened Marcus Bent just outside the area and Jim Magilton curled a 20-yard free-kick around the wall and inside Oakes' right-hand post.
The second half was a stroll for Ipswich although the introduction of Izale McLeod at least gave Derby a cutting edge in attack. The young striker brought a good save out of Andy Marshall and also rattled a post.
But Ipswich finished the game with another brilliant goal when Counago tore the home side apart on the right and set up Matt Holland who drove in a right-foot shot that left Oakes helpless.
