Ipswich Vs Gillingham - The Opposition View

How do you think Gillingham will do in the new season?
I think anything over 15th place would represent a successful season for the Gills this term. If we can keep our keep players fit and field a consistently strong side for most of the season, we could be looking at a top half or even top ten finish. One thing's for sure, we have enough in our side to make a mockery of our status of relegation favourites.

How do you think Ipswich will fare this season?
From what I saw of you guys last season, it was only the defence that cost Ipswich promotion. The Tractor Boys had no problems putting the ball in the net, but they let in far too many to sustain a promotion challenge. Jason De Vos looks a good signing, as does Kevin Horlock, who is an excellent passer and is hugely underrated. You should be looking at the playoffs, but I feel that there isn't the strength in depth in defensive areas for Ipswich to go up automatically.

How do you feel about the signing of ex Norwich Striker Iwan Roberts?
Initially, it looked like 36-year-old Iwan was our one and only transfer target - and that worried me and many other Gills fans. However, looking at Roberts as a player, he is exactly the sort of player we need. We need a big striker to lead the line and help provide chances for our other strikers, while chipping in with his fair share as well. He's a great signing and will also help the development of the other strikers at the club in his role as player/coach.

What Ipswich players do you feel could cause your side problems?
Ipswich are one of those sides without a big-name player, but they play well as a unit. If Kevin Horlock is fit, he'd be the man we would need to stop. I think the majority of the play would go through him and Jim Magilton, so if we stop those two, we could well stop Ipswich.

Are there any hidden gems/promising youngsters in your squad we should look out for?
The man for the future, and probably the present as well, is 17-year-old Matty Jarvis. He's only small, but he's lightning fast, has great ability on the ball and seems to play with no fear at all. Another hidden gem is fullback John Hills. Signed from Blackpool, he is a fantastic marauding left back who is also one of our most effective attacking players.

What sort of line-up can we expect from you?
An attacking one! We now have eight strikers battling for places and not a lot of quality midfielders, so we'll be loading our side with striking power and going for it a lot more this season. Expect a front three of Iwan Roberts, Patrick Agyemang and Darren Byfield.

Likely Gills lineup vs Ipswich
GK Jason Brown
LB John Hills
RB Nyron Nosworthy
CB Chris Hope
CB Leon Johnson
LM Danny Spiller
RM Mark Saunders
CM Paul Smith
ST Iwan Roberts
ST Darren Byfield
ST Patrick Agyemang

Predicted score?
It depends entirely on who defends best. We won a belter at your place last season by four goals to three. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we saw a fair few goals again this weekend. I'll go for a 2-2 draw.
